What It Is
Traditionally made of wood 3/4- to 1-inch thick, fascia is a horizontal board installed along rafter ends at eaves to close the gap between each rafter. Fascia boards are typically where gutters are affixed to, but they can also provide support for the bottom row of roofing materials like slate or tile.
Fascia Board Function
The primary role of a fascia board is to provide protection for the roof and your home’s interior against moisture, especially water making its way from your gutters. Additionally, they play an aesthetic role, creating a smooth and even appearance for the edge of your home.
Don’t Have Fascia Boards?
You are likely looking at the open-eave design that is common in many older properties. Without fascia boards, gutters are instead installed with the help of rafter brackets, which are galvanized arms that are screwed to either the top or the side of a rafter’s bottom end.
Protecting a Fascia Board
Typically, drip edges are installed to protect fascia boards. An L-shaped metal piece, a drip edge is nailed into roof decking, sitting below the first shingle layer to deflect water away from the fascia board.
Over time, however, fascia boards will deteriorate. When severely damaged, they need to be replaced immediately to avoid further damaging soffits and roofing material.
