How to Address Common Downspout Problems

By ensuring that your roofing and downspouts are in good condition, you’re protecting the rest of your home from severe water damage. When your downspouts no longer function as intended, water can destroy your home’s foundation, exterior and landscaping. As such, you should contact your local downspout contractor for assistance on this matter. Here’s how you can address common downspout problems.

How to Address Clogging

Your downspouts might get clogged due to leaves, branches, seeds and other debris when water is overflowing from your gutters. If the gutters aren’t unclogged immediately, water can find its way to your basement since it isn’t being driven away safely from your home. Clogging can also occur if you have small downspouts. Your downspout contractor will tell you if this is the case once they’re done inspecting it and will replace it accordingly.

What Happens if You Have a Short Downspout

Downspouts should direct water safely away from your home. However, if they’re improperly sized or if they’re short, it could cause the diverted rainwater to go to your basement. We highly recommend getting downspouts with a permanently attached extension or hinge kickers so that you can adjust your downspouts while maintaining your yard.

Another aspect you should consider is installing underground drain pipes with a pop-up drain on your lawn. This will easily divert water away from your home without the hassle of having long downspouts. Aside from the danger of having excessively long downspouts, they can also tarnish your home’s appearance.
