Important Questions to Ask a Prospective Gutter Contractor

Installation quality is a critical factor when getting new gutters. After all, no matter the quality of the new gutters, they won’t perform as expected if not installed properly. Here are important questions you should ask a gutter installer before hiring one.

Can you provide a copy of your license and insurance? Hiring an unlicensed and uninsured gutter contractor can lead to all sorts of problems down the road. A legitimate contractor should have no problems providing a copy of the company’s license information and insurance certificate. Just as important is making sure these are legitimate and verifiable. Your gutter contractor’s insurance certificate should include general liability insurance and workers’ compensation, which provides coverage for accidental property damage and worksite injuries, respectively.

How well do you know roofing systems? While not an absolute requirement, hiring a gutter contractor who also knows roofing systems offers some advantages. These pros more likely to be careful during gutter installation because they’d know what it would take to damage an existing roof. They can also help spot potential roofing damage and offer solutions that can help prolong roof and gutter life spans.

What gutter profiles do you offer? Most of today’s gutter systems are either half-round or K-style. Each profile has its own set of features and benefits, installation methods and aesthetics. Ideally, you should work with a gutter installer that offers both. Not only is it indicative of the breadth of their skill set, it also gives you more options if you are looking into improving your home’s looks as well as its functionality.

Do you offer gutter protection systems? Gutter protection systems come in all shapes and sizes, but the purpose is the same: to keep the gutters clear by preventing leaves and debris from getting inside. They help reduce, or even eliminate, the need to clean the gutters. You’ll want gutter protection systems that go on top of the gutter troughs, instead of in them. Not all gutter contractors offer them, but try to narrow your search down to those who do.
