Common Problems with Asphalt Shingles

At Renaissance Roofing we work to be an honest company that brings you a great service. We work to inform our customers about the benefits and downfalls of each roofing material in our area. Different roofing materials behave differently in different climates. According to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, asphalt shingles are a popular choice for residential properties. Records show that four out of five homes use this type of roofing material. With more than 12.5 billion square feet produced every year, asphalt shingles cover about five million homes annually. This is the most common roofing material that we use at Renaissance Roofing and is usually the best choice for our climate in Oregon. Every roofing material has downsides so here are some the issues that are associated with asphalt shingles.

Curling

Curling is typically a moisture and heat related issue. It usually accumulates in the shingles because of poor ventilation. The dimensions of the shingles may change as the moisture and heat build up and try to escape. Depending on the severity of the problem, you may need a roofing company to evaluate the curling and see if the roof can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced, and it is necessary to balance your intake and outflow ventilation to correct the problem.

If this is the case, your shingles are experiencing premature deterioration. While not always a manufacturer defect, premature granule loss is worth contacting your roofing installer and getting a claim started with the roofing materials manufacturer.

Blistering

Blisters are elevated sections on the shingles that are caused by different factors. Small ones are often considered part of the aging process. If the shingles are on the newer side, blisters may be a manufacturer’s defect. They may also be caused by poor roof ventilation.

Granule Loss

Similar to surface cracks, granule loss usually signals the end of life of your shingles. There are times, however, when extreme granule loss happens even if the shingles are not at the end of their life span. If this is the case, your shingles are experiencing premature deterioration.

Raised Shingles

Improper installation may lead to raised shingles that are not strong enough to resist wind uplift. Shingles should have the right number of fasteners in the right places. This is one of the reasons it’s important to hire a GAF Certified roofing company like Renaissance Roofing. If the roofers aren’t certified and don’t have the proper training, they may not be able to install the shingles properly. This may void your manufacturer’s warranty.

As you can tell, many of the problems associated with asphalt shingles are due to aging after serving a long roof-life. This makes asphalt shingles one of the best choices for roofing in Oregon. We hope this information helps you make a more informed decision when it comes to your roof. Contact us to learn more or schedule your roofing today! We roof all year long.
