3 Essential Tips for Gutter Maintenance

Every homeowner needs a functional gutter system in order to prevent rainwater from collecting and creating mushy, flooded landscapes around the home. If well-maintained, your gutters will significantly reduce the risk for basement flooding and soil erosion, and fend off potential damage to the structural integrity of your foundation. Today, we share helpful tips to keep your gutters working all year long:

1. Clear out your gutters. It is one of the first things you have to do every fall season. Clutter, such as a buildup of leaves, twigs and other debris, in your gutters can cause rainwater to overflow and spill onto the ground around your house. It is also an appropriate time to make sure that there are no natural droppings and bird nests in your gutters. Remember to exercise caution as some gutters cannot be adequately inspected using ladders. If you live in a two-story house, it will be better to call a professional to help you clean out or repair your gutters.

3. Prevent ice from forming in your gutters. It may be a good idea to check your gutters once more in December if you live in an area with bitter cold and long winters. You need to remove any remaining debris that can prevent your gutters from draining properly and lead to the formation of frozen water. Ice can cause your gutters to crack and create leaks over time, leading you to find a roofer to fix structural problems and, perhaps, pay a large sum of money.

3. Install gutter guards. Gutter guards effectively prevent gutters from collecting waste matter. A wire-mesh gutter guard helps keep debris out longer to avoid frequent cleanings. It can also prevent clogs and blockages that can cause rainwater to be pushed back up onto the roof.
