3 Remodeling Mistakes First-Time Homeowners Commonly Make

Remodeling horror stories? You’ve probably heard a thing or two about a roofer from hell or a contractor gone rogue. Unfortunately, they are far too common, especially with first-time homeowners. Luckily, you don’t have to share the same fate. By learning from the mistakes of others before you, you’re a step closer toward making sure your remodeling project is success

The mistakes you should avoid include:

  1. Thinking You Can Do the Job Yourself – Whether it’s because you want to save on costs or you want to take pride in doing something for your home, you are likely over your head thinking you can do the job yourself. Not only does remodeling entail different tasks that you might not have time to do all on your own, but a lot of these also require specialization for best results. Think you can do better than a gutter repair company? Probably not.
  2. Lowballing Your Budget – Nobody likes surprises, but you still have to be prepared for them, especially during a remodel. This is why it’s always a good idea to set aside at least 15% of your total project cost, giving you a contingency fund for unexpected expenses. Additionally, you can make sure you stay on track with your budget by avoiding changing your mind a lot once work begins.
  3. Focusing on Trends – Trends come and go. In fact, the bolder your kitchen is, for instance, in keeping with a certain trend, the sooner it can go out of style. And the less appealing your home becomes, the lower its value goes. It’s easy to overdo it when you have the freedom to overhaul your home, but you may end up doing more harm than good if you are not careful.
