3 Ways to Ensure Proper Stormwater Runoff Management

It is not enough that the outdoor areas of your property look beautiful and appealing – it should also be as functional as possible, especially when it comes to managing stormwater runoff.

Slow Down Water Runoff

By slowing down stormwater runoff, you help prevent downstream flooding and keep your landscaping from eroding. This also allows the soil on your property to soak the water, cleansing off pollutants effectively. To do this, you have to first identify areas around your property where large amounts of runoff accumulate.

When investing in a new gutter system, see to it that the downspouts are located in appropriate areas where there’s a lowered risk of downstream flooding. If possible, you can get started with stormwater collection by placing a rain barrel or cistern right underneath the ends of downspouts. Not only does this reduce runoff, but also helps promote water conservation.

Distribute Water Runoff

Apart from slowing down water runoff, you should also spread it out evenly. Find out where runoff flows along your roof, driveway or patio, taking note of where it usually ends up. Once you’ve identified them, you can now take steps to distribute runoff.

Bare ground, for instance, has an impervious surface, which means it can shed water runoff quickly. Covering it with wood chips, stones and mulch helps you slow down runoff and spread it out. These are elements that can break up rushing water effectively.

Sink Water Into the Ground

Promote infiltration on your soil by adding a rain garden. It is a depressed area in your landscape that collects stormwater runoff from your roof, driveway or patio and allows it to soak into the ground. Use ground cover materials like gravel and wood chips to facilitate infiltration.

Proper stormwater runoff management is possible when you have a well-functioning gutter system. If yours isn’t in good condition, get in touch with Renaissance Roofing, Inc.
