Key Components of an Asphalt Shingle Roof

Asphalt shingles are frequently used roofing materials for many homes, particularly in North America. They are relatively inexpensive to purchase and uncomplicated to install. They also exude a classic look that can survive for decades. But more importantly, asphalt shingles do a great job at protecting your interior home from harsh weather elements, such as hailstones, torrential rain and ultraviolet (UV) light rays – without paying too much for maintenance or repairs.

To learn more about the composition of an asphalt shingle roofing system, we break down its key components:

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt composition shingles are the outer layer of an asphalt shingle roof. They create the unique, multicolored look that sets your home apart from others in the neighborhood. They also provide an adequate water-shedding surface that helps snow, ice or water slide off your roof. This is to ensure that the elements won’t pool on the roof panels and cause leaks down the road.

Underlayment

The underlayment can either be water-resistant or completely waterproof. It is an essential factor when it comes to protecting the often wood-based deck from rot or mold. It is installed by roofers directly underneath the layers of asphalt shingles.

Flashing

The flashing is an ice and water barrier. It is bent around the vulnerable areas on the roof that need extra protection from rainwater or snow. These include valleys, chimneys and other roof protrusions.

Starter Strip

Starter strips, also known as starter shingles, provide waterproofing protection to the eave and rake edges of the roof, especially during a re-roofing process. They are utilized as the first row of sealant and help prevent shingle blow-offs from strong winds.

Hip and Ridge

Hip and ridge cap shingles are considered the finishing touch to an asphalt shingle roof. They often offer a high-end architectural appeal all while helping to prevent leaks.
