Why You Should Pick Dimensional Shingles Over Three-Tab Ones

Asphalt shingles are one of the most popular roofing choices in North America. Homeowners have three main types to choose from, namely premium, three-tab and dimensional shingles. Today’s post from Renaissance Roofing, Inc, highlights the features of three-tab and dimensional shingles, and discusses why the latter is the superior choice.

A Brief Overview of Three-Tab Shingles

While three-tab shingles are not the best on the market, they aren’t all that bad. In fact, they are lighter in weight because they are made of less material than their other counterparts. Most residential rental property owners prefer three-tab shingles due to their affordability. However, since they tend to be thinner, three-tab shingles need to be replaced sooner than other types of shingles. Note that three-tab shingles only come in one size and shape.

Highlighting the Features of Dimensional Shingles

Dimensional shingles come in various sizes and shapes, thus giving them that structured, dimensional look. Also known as architectural shingles, dimensional shingles weigh around 50% more than three-tab asphalt shingles. Since they are thicker, architectural shingles can withstand higher wind speeds than standard three-tab shingles and are less likely to result in roof leak repair.

Dimensional shingles typically have a minimum 30-year guarantee, but they can last longer if they are properly installed. While they cost more than three-tab shingles, dimensional shingles provide better protection against the elements and have a longer service life. Architectural shingles also provide a more visually interesting appearance for your roof since they come in various shapes and sizes.

Most roofers and homeowners prefer dimensional shingles due to their longevity and practicality. If you value durability and elegance, dimensional shingles are the roofing material for you.
